University Putra Malaysia :

Universiti Putra Malaysia was originally established as a School of Agriculture on 21 May 1931. It was developed on a 22-acre site in Serdang and initially offered only two programmes: a three-year diploma programme and a one-year certificate programme in agriculture. On 23 June 1947, the School of Agriculture was upgraded to the Malayan Agricultural College by Sir Edward Gent, the Governor of the Malayan Union at the time.

The establishment of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia later took shape when the School of Agriculture in Serdang merged with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Malaya. Dr. Mohd. Rashdan bin Haji Baba, who was then the principal of the Malayan Agricultural College, was appointed as Vice-Chancellor under Section 18 of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971. Universiti Pertanian Malaysia began its first academic session on 23 July 1973 with an intake of 1,559 students. These students commenced their studies in three founding faculties and one foundation division: the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, the Faculty of Forestry, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Division of Basic Sciences, which at that time emphasised forestry and veterinary fields in line with national policies and needs.

In the 1980s, UPM expanded its academic offerings into the fields of science and technology. On 3 April 1997, the university’s name was changed from Universiti Pertanian Malaysia to Universiti Putra Malaysia by the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, to reflect UPM’s status as a comprehensive institution of higher learning encompassing a wide range of disciplines, particularly science and information technology, which were essential for national development in the new millennium.
